My Body Is Not a Prayer Request: Disability Justice in the Church

You’re invited to join us for our next Love Out Loud book, My Body is Not a Prayer Request: Disability Justice in the Church by Amy Kenny.

My Body is Not a Prayer Request changed the way I see myself as I slowly move into dis-ability from disease, and it changed the way I see others who have experienced disability much longer, or their whole lives. I learned about ableism (discrimination in favor of able-bodied people) and that I am ableist myself. I had ah-ha moments as I read about how the church can be both a blessing and a curse to those who are disabled. I was empowered by Kenny’s shared experiences and I finished reading with a completely different perspective which rests in hope for my life and all of us.

If you are disabled, know someone who is (you know me!), or you’re wondering what to do or say to those who are disabled as you seek to show hospitality in church and in community, this will show you a path towards inclusion. But be prepared, the church (any of them, including Community of Christ) does not have a good record of welcoming the disabled into full community. I hope that when you read Kenny’s book, you will see the potential for growth and for belonging through your actions and words.

You are invited to join Emily and I as we walk with you through this very important book focused on critical ways of being.

We will begin My Body is Not a Prayer Request on Thursday, April 3rd, and we will also kick off our new rhythm of meeting once a month on the first Thursday of the month from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Pacific with this book. This gives you plenty of time to purchase or borrow the book.

We look forward to seeing and sharing with you!

With love,

Shandra
